2002 Players' Tour Match Play Championship

The year 2001 saw a new tournament offered to members of the Minnesota PGA Junior Golf Association Players' Tour, the Players' Tour Match Play Championship. The idea of having a junior match play championship had been around for a while, and the Minnesota PGA Junior Golf Committee decided it was time to give junior golfers a fun alternative to stroke play events, and to give juniors more experience in match play format. The 2001 Championship was so successful that it was offered again in 2002.
There were two ways to enter the 2002 Players' Tour Match Play Championship, one was to be exempt, and the other was to qualify from one of the two qualifying sites. Exemptions were based on the 2001 Players' Tour season, and included Players of the Year and a set number of boys and girls from each of the four Series. The field was set for 64 boys and 16 girls. Listed are the results from the two qualifying sites, and the exempt participants for the Championship.
The 2002 Players' Tour Match Play Championship was held July 17-19 at the Legacy Courses at Cragun's in Brainerd, MN. To be eligible for this event, the junior must have been a member of the Players' Tour and qualified at one of two sites or earned an exemption. Exemptions into the match play championship were based on results from various 2001 Players' Tour events.
The boys' field consisted of 64 players, and the girls' field consisted of 16 players. Making their way through the stages of match play were Krista Swanson of Forest Lake, MN and Eric Johnson of Elk River, MN. Eric won 6 matches to capture the Boys' Title, and Krista won the Girls' Title in 4 matches. It was a grueling test for all golfers, since the juniors battled a repressive heat while playing a lot of golf in a few days. Congratulations Krista and Eric!
